Jewish Prague

September 12 & 14

Prague once had a thriving Jewish population - all ended in WW2. Even after the war, state-sponsored anti-semitism continued and many of the Jews who returned to Prague subsequently emigrated to Israel and other places. Not until the end of Commnism, did things begin to get better.

We visited several old synagogues which are no longer being used, the "new" (1905) Jerusalem syngagogue, built is Nouveau Islamic architectural style, which is being used again for services. The Jewish cemetery dates from 1439 to 1787. Because of lack of space, later remains were interred upon prior ones (after adding layers of osil) and tombstones became jumbled upon one another.
